Environmentally Friendly, Recyclable & Durable

Core building materials

The central part of the CITRA System is Expanded Polystyrene (EPS), which is a lightweight, safe, sustainable, non-toxic, non-flammable, and fully recyclable material. This material is composed of organic elements (carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen) and does not contain chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) nor hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs).

The EPS used by CITRA System contains up to 20% recycled material and 100% of the offcuts from the production is recyclable. The EPS can be recycled by any EPS manufacturer in South Africa without any cost.

For the structural frame, we use Magnesium Oxide (MgO), which is an environmentally friendly, strong, and non-toxic material. This material provides strength and insulation whilst joining the panels together.

The internal and external layers are made of a high-performance plaster. Each has a 30mm thickness which is connected with fireproof MgO studs. Glass fibre mesh provides additional durability to the plaster,  and local steel reinforcement gives the plaster the necessary strength. The plaster is designed to have the best adhesion to the EPS and this combination can regulate humidity.

Building and manufacturing process

The CITRA System is designed for easy buildup on site.

The panels are pre-cut by precision computerised machines in our factory and assembled on site.

The assembly of the walls and roof of a single-story house only requires 1 day to complete and leaves no residues.

Once the panels have been erected, the plaster can be immediately applied, making use of a spray machine. This, together with the lightweight nature of the CITRA System cuts the use of large machinery and transportation to a minimum.

Carbon Footprint

CITRA System utilises minimal energy both in manufacturing and building, leading to a significant reduction in carbon emissions, not only during construction but throughout the whole life cycle of the building.

The thermal insulating nature of the material creates a consistent internal climate, which reduces the need for cooling and heating on up to 70% more than conventional construction materials.

90% of our materials are completely recyclable and can be dismantled at any stage of the building life.
